Walnut Chippendale Upholstered Bench
Description:
Unlike most benches of this period, the bench is considerably larger than most. It has six nicely shaped straight legs joined by a cross-stretcher. The top is upholstered with muslin.
Materials and Techniques:
Walnut legs and stretchers with tulip poplar frame.
Condition:
The condition of this bench is precisely what you would expect. No breaks or significant wear to the frame, legs and stretchers. There is tacking evidence along the frame consistent with the application of upholstery.
Origin: Pennsylvania.
Date: c. 1780.
Provenance:
This bench came out of the du Pont estate in Delaware.
